Helping Your Child Thrive Through Solution Focused Hypnotherapy Sessions

Updated: Sep 26

As parents, we all want the best for our children. We strive to provide them with the tools they need to succeed and be happy. Sometimes having a professional step in to help can be the catalyst for real change, The approach that I use is Solution Focused Hypnotherapy, a combination of therapeutic techniques and clinical hypnosis. This method can help children find solutions to overcome challenges, build confidence, and thrive in various aspects of their lives. In this blog post, we will explore how Solution Focused Hypnotherapy can benefit your child and how to make the most of these sessions.

What is Solution Focused Hypnotherapy?

Solution Focused Hypnotherapy is a therapeutic technique that comprises mainly of talking therapy, based in the principles of Solution Focused Brief Therapy (SFBT), Neurolinguistic programming (NLP) and Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) along with Clinical Hypnosis. After helping your child to focus more on the positive aspects of life we then use guided relaxation and focused attention to achieve a heightened state of awareness. In this state of relaxation, individuals can access their subconscious mind, which can help them engage the brains 'default network' a part of the brain that focuses on various issues and problem solving. For children, hypnotherapy can be particularly effective because they are naturally more open to suggestion and imagination.

Benefits of Hypnotherapy for Children

Hypnotherapy can offer numerous benefits for children including:

  • Anxiety Reduction: Many children experience anxiety, whether it is related to school, social situations, or family dynamics. Hypnotherapy can help them manage anxiety by teaching relaxation techniques and positive thinking.

  • Improved Focus and Concentration: Hypnotherapy can enhance a child's ability to concentrate. This can be especially helpful for children with attention difficulties, allowing them to perform better in school.

  • Overcoming Fears and Phobias: Many children have fears, such as fear of the dark or fear of speaking in public. Hypnotherapy can help them overcome these fears in a safe and supportive environment.

  • Boosting Self-Esteem: Hypnotherapy can help children build confidence and self-esteem. By reinforcing positive beliefs about themselves, children can develop a healthier self-image.

  • Managing Pain and Discomfort: For children dealing with chronic pain or discomfort, hypnotherapy can provide relief by helping them relax and shift their focus away from the pain.

  • Better Sleep: We offer a sleep hypnosis track to help your child fall asleep easier.

How Hypnotherapy Sessions Work

Hypnotherapy sessions involve a trained therapist working with your child on goals and aspirations, finding their own solutions through effective questioning and then guiding the child into a relaxed state. The hypnosis process may include:

  1. Induction: The therapist helps the child relax through calming techniques, such as deep breathing or visualization. Your child may choose to relax in a comfy chair, lie down on the couch, or continue playing, or doing art.

  2. Suggestion: Once the child is in a relaxed state, the therapist offers positive suggestions tailored to the child's specific needs.

  3. Reinforcement: The therapist may use imagery or stories to reinforce the suggestions, making them more impactful.

  4. Awakening: The session concludes with the therapist gently bringing the child back to full awareness.

Preparing Your Child for Hypnotherapy

To ensure a successful hypnotherapy experience, it can help to prepare your child. Here are some tips to help you get started:

  • Explain the Process: Talk to your child about what talking therapy and hypnotherapy is and how it can help them. Use simple language and encourage them to ask questions.

  • Address Concerns: If your child has any fears or concerns about therapy, listen to them and provide reassurance. Let them know that it is a safe and supportive process.

  • Set Goals Together: Discuss what your child hopes to achieve through hypnotherapy. Setting clear goals can help them feel more invested in the process.

  • Choose the Right Therapist: Look for a qualified hypnotherapist who has experience working with children. A good therapist will create a comfortable and welcoming environment.

What to Expect During a Session

Understanding what to expect during a hypnotherapy session can help ease any anxiety your child may have. Here is a general outline of what a session may look like:

  1. Initial Consultation: The therapist will meet with you and your child to discuss their needs and goals. This session also gives the therapist a chance to explain the neuroscience (how our brains work!) behind things like anxiety, anger or depression and what we can do about it. This is a great time to ask any questions.

  2. Weekly Sessions: If your child thinks they'd like to work with the therapist, we will set up weekly sessions, for the child to attend on their own for one hour.

  3. Focus on Positivity: We will actively help support your child in noticing and commenting more on the positive things going on in their lives, doing this alongside a diary that they keep to record the positives from their week.

  4. Relaxation Techniques: The therapist will guide your child through relaxation techniques to help them feel calm and comfortable.

  5. Hypnosis: Once your child is relaxed, the therapist will lead them into a hypnotic state just with their voice and some gentle music. This may involve visualisation or guided imagery. Children naturally enjoy stories and there will be metaphors and stories throughout.

  6. Suggestions and Reinforcement: The therapist will provide positive suggestions tailored to your child's goals. They may use visualisation or imagery to reinforce these suggestions.

  7. Awakening: The session will conclude with the therapist gently bringing your child back to full awareness and sending them on their way out to greet parents or carers.

Supporting Your Child After Sessions

After hypnotherapy sessions, it is good to support your child as they process their experience. Here are some ways to do this:

  • Encourage Open Communication: While probing questions will be unwelcome, you may find that your child will want to discuss their sessions with you. Let them lead, and share if they want to. Validating their positive experience of therapy and their ability to engage can be really helpful.

  • Practice Relaxation Techniques: Encourage your child to practice the relaxation techniques they learned during hypnotherapy. This can help them manage stress and anxiety in everyday situations. Encourage them to use the sleep audio every night to help drift off into a peaceful sleep.

  • Celebrate Progress: Acknowledge and celebrate any progress your child makes. Begin to notice and verbalise the positive changes that you're noticing. Take stock of how far they have come. This can boost their confidence and motivate them to continue their journey.

Finding the Right Hypnotherapist

Choosing the right hypnotherapist is crucial for your child's success. Here are some tips to help you find a qualified professional:

  • Research Credentials: Look for a therapist with proper training and certification in hypnotherapy. Check their background and experience working with children.

  • Read Reviews: Look for testimonials or reviews from other parents. This can give you insight into the therapist's effectiveness and approach.

  • Schedule a Consultation: Many therapists offer initial consultations. Use this opportunity to ask questions and gauge whether they are a good fit for your child.

  • Trust Your Instincts: Ultimately, trust your instincts when choosing a therapist. Your child's comfort and safety should be the top priority.

The Journey Ahead

Hypnotherapy can be a powerful tool for helping your child thrive. By addressing their unique challenges and fostering positive change, you can support their growth and development. Remember to be patient and encouraging throughout the process. Each child's journey is different, and progress may take time.

As you embark on this journey, keep an open mind and stay engaged. Hypnotherapy can provide your child with valuable skills that will serve them well throughout their life. With the right support and guidance, your child can learn to navigate challenges with confidence and resilience.
